All-African beans, bought fair — Rosebank since 2010, home of the Original Blend.
Motherland started as an idea in 2009, when Rob and Kirstin Maud and Seb Schneider noticed Africa grew some of the world's best coffee but had almost no coffee brands of its own. Their first café opened in Rosebank in 2010; there are now more than 20 across Jozi, Pretoria and Cape Town. Every bean is African-origin — Ethiopia, Rwanda, Burundi and the DRC — bought at a fair price from co-ops and small farmers. The Original Blend (Rwandan Musasa + Ethiopian Sidamo) is the one that started it all: earthy body, chocolate, a floral citrus finish.
